Cardiologist: Dr Cameron Ward

The Cardiology Unit at Mater Children's Hospital provides an inpatient, outpatient and consultation based service which also incorporates Mater Mothers' Hospital neonatal nurseries. Most non-invasive cardiac investigations are provided at Mater Children's Hospital including electrocardiography, holter monitoring, echocardiography and exercise testing. All invasive investigations, tilt testing and cardiac surgery are provided through the Prince Charles Hospital.

Mater Children's Hospital registrars rotate to the Prince Charles Hospital for training in cardiac post operative care and further training in cardiology and invasive cardiac investigations. Registrars are involved in the Cardiac Catheterisation Conference and can gain training in paediatric echocardiography. Advanced training in paediatric cardiology is available at registrar level and in the near future a fellowship position is likely to be created with more formalised training.

The Prince Charles Hospital undertakes approximately 350 paediatric cardiac cases per annum and with the increasing Queensland population and with surgery on more complex cardiac conditions, this number is increasing rapidly. Approximately 250 cardiac catheterisations are undertaken at the Prince Charles Hospital per annum, and, as with surgery, this number is now increasing. There is also an increasing emphasis on interventional cardiac catheterisation.
