Mater Education is Mater Health Services on-site learning hub and provides a collaborative and integrated program of contemporary and innovative teaching and learning activities across Mater campuses and beyond.
Our key support functions are outlined below. For more information, visit our website.
Delivery of Qualifications
As a Registered Training Organisation, Mater Education independently delivers a range of nationally recognised qualifications from Certificate to Diploma level in areas such as nursing, pathology, dietetics, nutrition assistance, and project management.
Our flagship program is the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled – Division 2 nursing) with all components including comprehensive clinical placement experiences provided onsite by our faculty of contemporary expert clinicians. We incorporate a practical, problem solving approach to learning with a diverse range of clinical specialty electives available. Upon successful completion of the 18 month full time program, graduates are eligible to apply for national registration as an Enrolled Nurse with the ability to practice throughout Australia.
Clinical Placement Coordination
Mater Education has established strong partnerships with a select group of universities and supports both postgraduate and undergraduate student clinical training across a range of health disciplines and also provides formalised Graduate Programs for Registered Nurses, Midwives and Enrolled Nurses. The centre also coordinates specialty post graduate nursing qualifications in collaboration with its university partners.
Simulated Learning Environments
Mater Education has a number of designated simulated learning environments across Mater's South Brisbane campus, including an in-situ simulation and a purpose built simulation centre—MEPIC (Mater Education Practice Improvement Centre)—combining both high and low fidelity suites with a focus on learner centred education for safe, patient centred care. The centre is interprofessional in its approach and in the design and delivery of clinical education programs for both undergraduate clinical training and post graduate continuing professional development.
Each year, since 2000, Mater Education convenes Mater’s annual National Leadership and Learning Conference, offering a high quality program attracting delegates from all over Australia. Mater Education also facilitates Mater’s annual Clinical Teaching and Learning Awards which recognise Mater staff who have provided outstanding commitment to teaching and learning across 10 categories.
Online and Collaborative Learning
Mater Education manages a long established customised Learning Management System (LMS) providing 24 hour access from work or home, to over 140 online e-learning programs, education resources, support toolkits and templates for Mater staff, students and volunteers. There are also a significant number of Mater Education electronic collaboration portals and active Communities of Practice which further support the delivery of education at Mater.
Mater Education's Multimedia Services team further support the design and delivery of both clinical and non-clinical education programs across the campus and beyond. This includes the development of a Clinical Skills Video Library to educating clinicians in a number of speciality practice areas.
