Perioperative Clinical Transition Program

Perioperative Clinical Transition ProgramMater Private Hospital Brisbane's 18 month Perioperative Clinical Transition Program (PCTP) will help you develop the essential competencies needed to provide quality care in a surgical environment. Our program is designed to advance your clinical skills and develop an ongoing commitment to professional development from the beginning of your career.

Our PCTP offers clinical experience in a variety of perioperative specialties. As you develop from nursing student to proficient practitioner, your practical competency-based training will be enhanced by links to printed, electronic, video and CD-ROM learning resources. Tutorials and clinical mock simulations are conducted for the more complex competencies.

Placement

Four 12-week rotations will help you learn the roles of Instrument (Scrub) Nurse and Circulating (Scout) Nurse. (The first two rotations are in less complex surgical specialties.) Your Post Anaesthesia Care Unit and anaesthetic care assignments will be completed in the final weeks of the first half of the year, followed by a six-month elective specialty placement, working three rostered shifts each week.

Education and Support

You will be supported by experienced perioperative nurses and clinical nurse educators who will help you with your learning and development needs.

Commencing each year in January, the program includes a 40-hour orientation course presented by Mater Education Centre over five days.
