The new Mater Mothers’ Hospital is the premier maternity facility in the southern hemisphere with 88 public maternity beds and 16 birthing rooms.
Mater Mothers’ Hospitals (MMH) provides integrated tertiary services for women and babies including obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatalology, maternal fetal medicine, obstetric medicine, perinatal outreach education and midwifery group practice.
An expanded Neonatal Critical Care Unit provides 79 cot spaces including intensive care, high dependency and special care cots, making it one of the biggest Neonatal Critical Care Units in Australia.
Additional services within the new facility are a Pregnancy Assessment and Observation Unit wich is collocated with the Birth Suite. Managed by Mater Mothers’ midwives, this unit enables women with pregnancy related concerns to be reviewed in a setting that is comfortable and inviting. Women have the ability to access the support of obstetric, medical and allied health professionals as required.
Features of the new Mater Mothers’ Hospital include:
- an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit
- more single rooms with ensuites
- five larger single rooms (one on each inpatient level) with disabled access
- rooms with access to external views, natural light, personal baby bathing facilities and ensuites
- a maximum of two women per room
- a closer proximity to Mater Adult Hospital Critical Care Unit
- integrated technology to provide more efficient monitoring for high risk women
- hearing loops in the education room
- a consult room in the Antenatal Clinic.
