Happy Mercy Day!

Monday 24 September is Mercy Day and each year on Mercy Day we celebrate and reinforce our commitment to the Mater Mission and Values.

We also recognise those Mater People who go above and beyond the expectation of their role within the framework of the Mission and Values—in particular, Mercy—through the Mercy Week Mission Awards.

Why do we celebrate Mercy Day?

Mercy Day is celebrated on 24 September—the anniversary of the date on which Catherine McAuley (1778–1841) established the House of Mercy in Baggot Street, Dublin in 1827. Four years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy who established Mater in 1906.

On Mercy Day, Mater celebrates its identity and the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy and acknowledges our ongoing commitment to Mater Mission and Values.

Each interaction—whether it is with a colleague or patient—presents an opportunity for Mater People to reflect Mercy in action to all whom we are privileged to serve.

Mater’s Group Director of Mission Leadership Madonna McGahan said Mercy Day was an important acknowledgement of Mater People and their commitment to its Mission and Values—Mercy, Dignity, Care, Commitment and Quality.

“Catherine McAuley —the woman who started the Sisters of Mercy story—had an incredible vision to deliver exceptional care to all people and we continue to build on this legacy today at Mater thanks to its dedicated employees and volunteers," Ms McGahan said.
