Mater hosts Tim Sharp `Laser Beak Man’ art exhibition
Tuesday, 18 May 2010
An exhibition of art works by Tingalpa’s Tim Sharp, an award-winning young artist who has Autism, will be showcased at the Kids in Mind Art Gallery at Mater Health Services on 26 May—2 June.
Mr Sharp’s exhibition will coincide with a conference featuring international Autism expert, Professor Rita Jordan. Autism is a developmental disorder and a complex life long disability.
Kids in Mind Gallery Coordinator Kareen Adam said the exhibition was an opportunity for people to gain a greater understanding of Autism, a cause Kids in Mind Art Gallery and Mater Child and Youth Mental Health Service, wholeheartedly support.
“One of the key missions of our gallery is to explore and share with the public the link between creativity and mental health by supporting individuals like Tim,” Ms Adam said.
“This is certainly an important exhibition for Kids in Mind Art Gallery as Tim represents what we are hoping to promote—how art can enrich the lives of young people living with challenges and complex individual needs.
“Tim’s work is especially uplifting and inspiring – they are colourful and full of wit and humour. It is a great pleasure to support such a positive role model in the Autism community.”
Diagnosed at age three, Tim has always used drawing as a form of communication. At age 11, he invented Laser Beak Man who has provided Tim with a way to show the world his great sense of humour and intelligence as well as his quirky way of looking at life.
The exhibition is open to the public on 26 May—2 June, 9 am to 5 pm, (Gallery is open Mondays to Fridays only).
Kids in Mind Art Gallery is a not-for-profit gallery space located at the foyer of Mater Child and Youth Mental Health Service Management Unit, level 2, Potter Building, Annerley Road, South Brisbane.
