Saturday 24 September marked Mercy Day and to celebrate this significant day in its history, Mater Health Services held a number of events in the proceeding week, acknowledging the spirit of mercy within the organisation.
As part of Mater’s celebrations, the 2005 Mercy Awards were held on Thursday 22 September to recognise the exceptional people working at the hospital.
The awards are held annually, recognising exceptional individuals, departments or units who perform "over and above" the expectations of their job, to deliver a standard of service that reflects Mater Health Service’s Mission and Values.
Mercy organisations across the world celebrate Mercy Day to acknowledge the aspirations of Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831. It provides an opportunity to commemorate the history and work of the Order, and to reflect on the influence of Mercy in our lives.
At this year’s ceremony, seven finalists from all areas across the complex—from hotel services through to nursing—were honoured for their contribution to the organisation over the past year.
Three additional awards were also introduced at the ceremony, the "Mater Living Treasure Award", the "Clinical Award" and the "Support Services Award".
Janene Crockett was the recipient of the inaugural "Mater Living Treasure Award". For the last 25 years she has dedicated her life in managing The Reg Leonard House complex, which is a block of self-contained units providing accommodation for outpatients or relatives of Mater Hospital patients who do not live in Brisbane. Janene has been extremely devoted to ensuring that professional and holistic care is offered to all Mater patients and their families twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. She has supported thousands of people over the years, providing them with a "home away from home".
The "Clinical Award" was presented to Sarah Kelly, who has been a leader in the development and continuation of the Young Women’s Program at Mater Mothers’ Hospital. This innovative initiative provides exceptional antenatal care and education to high risk women aged 19 and under. Sarah and her team of midwives have been able to provide a safe facility for pregnant women who are in need, ensuring that they receive appropriate care, as well as developing trusting relationships with patients.
Rada Lazovic and Chris Anker, managers of Mater’s Café on 3, were the recipients of the "Support Service Award". Throughout the years, Rada and Chris have been extremely dedicated to creating a friendly, relaxing environment for all staff.
The work of Janene, Sarah, Rada and Chris reflects the spirit of mercy, as they each provide kindness, compassion and hope to Mater's community.
