Brisbane physiotherapist Michelle Kenway has designed a unique exercise program called, "Bone-Fit for Beginners", a professional exercise program to improve bone health and prevent the onset of osteoporosis.

Available in both DVD and video format, "Bone-Fit for Beginners" is based upon extensive research into exercises proven to be the most effective for improved bone health in the latest scientific medical studies.

According to Ms Kenway, it is currently predicted that one in every two Australian women and one in three men over the age of 60 years will be likely to sustain a bone fracture due to osteoporosis. Many people remain unaware about how to exercise effectively to prevent bone loss and improve their bone health.

Ms Kenway created the DVD and video in response to an overwhelming demand from bone fit devotees that attend her weekly "Bone-Fit" exercise classes at Mater Private Hospital Redland.

"Bone loss will affect all of us as we grow old. In both sexes, bone loss commences at approximately forty years of age and rapidly accelerates in women with the onset of menopause. Bone is actually living tissue and one of the most important ways of minimising bone loss as we age is to incorporate appropriate exercise into our regular routine.

"My patients are often surprised to learn that recent study findings have shown activities such as everyday walking and swimming will not improve bone health, despite having many other wonderful health benefits," Ms Kenway said.

The "Bone Fit" exercise program has been designed to:

  • Safely and effectively improve bone health by strengthening those areas most at risk of fracture (hips, spine and wrists).
  • Improve muscle strength, tone and endurance.
  • Teach awareness and control of the abdominal and back muscles that improve posture and spinal stability.
  • Reduce back and neck and joint pain.
  • Improve muscle and joint flexibility.
  • Improve balance to reduce the likelihood of falls.
  • Improve the ability to perform everyday tasks with ease.

“The DVD/Video is easy to follow and carefully guides you safely through each of the exercises and allows you to exercise at your own level of comfort and ability. It provides a fantastic alternative to high impact exercise, which is not always possible or appropriate for many of us,” Ms Kenway said.

“The 'Bone-Fit' program is suitable for individuals at risk of osteoporosis (all women and many men) and for individuals with already decreased bone density. It contains an information brochure about the program for your general practitioner if you have been diagnosed with severe or established osteoporosis,” she said.

“Bone-Fit for Beginners” has been professionally produced and filmed locally in beautiful surroundings with the courtesy of Mater Private Hospital Redland and Sirromet Mount Cotton.

The program is available on both video and DVD for $39 (inc. GST) and can be purchased by contacting Healthy Fit Physio on +61 7 3821 0644 or email enquiries@healthyfitphysio.com.au.
