Mater Private Hospital Redland is holding its last free community education seminar for 2006, on the topic of ovarian and breast cancers, on Wednesday 18 October.
Mater Private Hospital Redland consulting physicians, gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Michael Mastry and general surgeon Dr Jason Lambley, will both be presenting at this seminar.
According to Dr Mastry ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cancer affecting Australian women.
“Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumour of the ovary, which can affect one in 90 women of all ages.
“At this stage, we are unsure what causes this type of cancer, with most women diagnosed with ovarian cancer already being in the advanced stages of this disease and there is a marked difference in survival rates if the cancer is detected in its early stages.
“Which is why it is so important for women who are currently experiencing sudden abdominal swelling, weight gain or bloating, feeling pain or pressure in the lower abdominal area, lower backache or cramps or un explained weight loss to see a doctor as they could all be early symptoms of ovarian cancer,” Dr Mastry said.
To complement Dr Mastry's presentation, Dr Lambley will be speaking on breast cancer and the surgical options currently available to patients.
“Nationally, 11 700 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, and approximately 2600 deaths annually, which makes this form of cancer the major cause of death for women in our country.
“Over the last decade there has been significant research conducted into breast cancer and from this research we now have a number of treatments and surgical options which have proven successful in increasing the survival rates for women.
“On the night, I will be explaining the current diagnosis and treatment options available and how a patient, with their doctor, can work together through a multidisciplinary approach to manage their care,” Dr Lambley said.
Mater Private Hospital Redland would like to encourage members of the community who have a family history of either ovarian or breast cancer or would like further information to attend this free seminar.
Mater Private Hospital Redland community education sessions are proudly supported by the Redland Shire Council.
