In an Australian first, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals (MMH) neonatal nurses are conducting retinal photography on premature babies for ophthalmic examinations.

Mercy Week award winners 'proud of what they do'

Mater celebrates its identity and heritage of the Sisters of Mercy in September every year, during Mercy Week.

The week long celebration from 20–26 September is an organisation-wide acknowledgement of Mater’s ongoing commitment to its Mission and Values, with this year’s theme based on the phrase ‘be proud of what you do’.

Dedicated breast cancer service supports Bayside women

The arrival of breast care nurse, Jenny Jones, this year has further solidified Mater Private Hospital Redland’s delivery of dedicated breast cancer services to women in the Bayside region.

General surgeon, Dr Jason Lambley has been a member of the Mater Private Breast Cancer Centre since 2006 and provides breast cancer services to women at Mater Private Hospital Redland, one of the few outer metropolitan hospitals providing localised care that negates the need for women to travel to inner-city hospitals for their surgical management.

Australian researchers endorse non-invasive fetal blood test

A group of Australian researchers are one step closer to a non-invasive test to predict fetal blood group typing for Rhesus (Rh) D-negative women to determine the risk of haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN)—a condition that can cause fetal anaemia, hydrops fetalis and perinatal death.

Novel therapy for liver cancer at Mater

While primary liver cancer remains relatively uncommon in Australia, incidence rates have risen over the last three decades due to increased hepatitis B and C infections. Secondary liver cancer is a common problem, particularly in the setting of colorectal carcinoma.
