Mater welcomed a very special delivery on Friday 12 February when Alicia Zeneldin became the 300,000th baby birthed at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals.
Weighing a healthy 3.85 kg, Alicia was the second child for parents Ramsey and Nastasha.
Acting Director of Women’s Health Services Maree Reynolds congratulated the parents and staff for delivering our newest little miracle.
“Delivering our 300,000th baby would not be possible without the support of the Queensland public and our exceptional staff who made this day a reality,” Ms Reynolds said.
Mater Mother’s Hospitals are the busiest maternity facility in Queensland birthing 9,550 births in 2009.
The hospitals have a proud history of producing miracles such as the birth of Australia’s smallest surviving baby, Jonathon Heeley who weighed a tiny 374 grams and performing Australia’s first in-utero fetal laser surgery to treat Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, a major complication of an identical twin pregnancy.
In January 2008 Mater Mothers’ Hospitals also celebrated the survival of its smallest girl, Jessica Simmonds. She weighed just 382 grams at birth and spent 117 days in hospital.
Mater Mothers’ Hospitals were the focus of much attention on 30 May 2008 when Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC Governor of Queensland and Most Reverend John A Bathersby DD Archbishop of Brisbane opened and blessed the new maternity facilities that were built to meet the growing needs of the community.
Funded jointly by Queensland Health and Mater Health Services, the new public and private Mater Mothers’ Hospitals formed part of a $188M redevelopment partnership.
