Nurse Research Centre

About the Research Centre
Overview
The Nursing Research Centre, established in 1992, is a resource for nursing clinicians, educators and administrators. The centre provides consultation and investigative services related to patient care and nursing management. The centre's staff collaborate with Mater clinical staff and university academics to conduct the research. Mentorship is also available to staff to develop their proposals and the conduct of their studies. Activities of the centre are directed toward the goal of excellence in nursing practice at Mater.
Goal
The conduct and utilisation of nursing research will enhance Mater's reputation for excellence and quality of health care.
Objectives
The objectives of the Nurse Research Centre are:
- to facilitate the utilisation of evidence by nurses in provision of patient care
- to determine clinical nursing research priorities
- to provide nurses support in the conduct of research.
Queensland Centre For Evidenced-Based Nursing and Midwifery
(A Collaborating Centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute)
In December 1996 Mater Health Services became the base for the Queensland Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery, a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute.
The purpose of the Institute is to work with researchers, clinicians and managers to identify areas where nurses and other health professionals most urgently require summarised evidence on which to base their practice. Additionally, the Institute will carry out and facilitate systematic reviews of international research with a view toward preparing summaries of research evidence in the form of BPIS. A further activity of the Institute is to determine the effect of implementing best practice recommendations on patient care in a pre- and post-design format. This analysis will determine the clinical efficacy of the recommendations of each BPIS.
The Queensland Centre has an advisory committee of representatives from major nursing organisations throughout Queensland who are responsible for the strategic direction of the centre, and a management committee, which is involved in planning and working toward the achievement of the strategic plan.
Education activities of the Institute and its centres include offering short courses in evidence-based practice and its implementation for clinicians, researchers, managers and educators. Fee for service consultancies are also offered.
Activities
The Queensland Centre for Evidence-Based Nursing and Midwifery are to:
- Contribute to cost effective health care through the promotion of evidence-based practice in nursing and midwifery.
- Conduct systematic reviews through analysis of research and other literature.
- Collaborate with expert researchers and clinicians in Queensland to facilitate the development of Best Practice Information Sheets based on systematic reviews of research.
- Participate in the dissemination and implementation of Best Practice Information Sheets, evaluate their impact on nursing practice and health care and initiate randomised controlled trials and other primary research when indicated by the findings of the systematic review.
