Adult Respiratory Medicine
The Adult Respiratory Medicine Department provides a general respiratory medicine service, predominantly to Brisbane’s southern suburbs. This department also provides the regional specialist Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service for Brisbane’s southern side.
The Adult Respiratory Medicine Department is committed to providing patients and their families with the highest levels of care for all respiratory conditions.
The Adult Respiratory Medicine Department comprises two consultant chest physicians, a senior respiratory registrar, a respiratory nurse consultant and a respiratory research nurse. (Details of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit are provided separately.)
We have excellent links with other specialty units within the hospital and with other sub-specialty thoracic services in Brisbane. The service includes a multidisciplinary lung cancer clinic.
We provide both inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and management of complex respiratory conditions, utilising facilities for acute non-invasive ventilation, complex lung function testing, integrated cardiopulmonary exercise testing, radiology, flexible bronchoscopy and pulmonary rehabilitation.
The unit is also committed to research in both general respiratory conditions and adult cystic fibrosis and continues to have an active research program.
Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit
The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mater is the regional adult cystic fibrosis service for Brisbane’s south side and surrounding areas. The unit provides a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of cystic fibrosis patients. This team comprises dedicated chest physicians, a care manager/coordinator, physiotherapists, a dietitian, a social worker, diabetes educator and nursing staff.
Our overriding goal is to help our cystic fibrosis patients to remain as well as possible so that they can enjoy the important things in life (away from hospital). We aim to achieve this by developing an effective partnership between patients and the cystic fibrosis team. An individualised, effective treatment program is tailored to suit each and every patient.
We contribute to the Cystic Fibrosis national data registry, which now publishes information upon patient outcomes from all Australian CF centres on the Cystic Fibrosis Australia website. Outcomes for Mater and other centres can be viewed by selecting the Australian CF Centre Comparisons documents from the Cystic Fibrosis Australia website.
