Mater Nutrition and Dietetics

Mater Nutrition and Dietetics department provides comprehensive, high quality, evidence-based nutrition and dietetic services to all hospitals at Mater Health Services.

Mater dietitians are qualified and experienced allied health professionals who practice within the Dietitians Association of Australia’s code of ethics and guidelines.

Our dietitians apply the art and science of human nutrition to help people understand the relationship between food and health, make dietary choices to attain and maintain health and prevent and treat illness and disease. The roles and responsibilities of our dietitians at Mater include:

  • collecting, organising and assessing data relating to the health and nutritional status of individuals and groups
  • interpreting scientific information and communicating information, advice, education and professional opinion to individuals and groups
  • managing client-centered nutrition care for individuals by planning appropriate diets and menus and educating people on their individual nutritional needs and ways of accessing and preparing their food
  • planning, implementing and evaluating nutrition programs with groups as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • undertaking food and nutrition research and evaluating practice
  • provision of home enteral nutrition for individuals requiring enteral or oral nutrition support
  • monitoring malnutrition and implementing strategies to improve an individual’s nutritional status during an inpatient stay
  • managing food service systems to provide safe and nutritious food by designing nutritionally appropriate menus and designing and implementing nutrition policies.

As part of the Nutrition and Dietetics team, nutrition assistants provide clinical and operational support and significant links to Food Services under the direction of a senior nutrition assistant and senior foodservice dietitian to ensure alignment, enhancement and efficiency in the delivery of patient care across campuses.

Eligibility

Mater Nutrition and Dietetics services are available for patients of Mater.

Costs

Costs may vary according to the service to which you have been referred.

Most patients seen within the non-insured system will be covered by Medicare, provided they have a valid Medicare Card.

Patients who are referred privately to Health and Wellness or choose to access Health and Wellness by self-referral, will incur fees. Mater Health and Wellness dietitians are recognised providers with insured health funds and HIC. Rebates for services are available where applicable.

Please speak with our friendly staff for more information regarding any questions you may have about fees and costs invovled.

Referral—inpatient

For adult, maternity and paediatric services clients can be referred by their Mater specialist or other Mater health professionals.

Referral—outpatient

Services for those without private health insurance:

  • Patients must be referred by Mater medical staff or other Mater health professionals.
  • Specialist and GP referrals are now accepted for patients within the Mater catchment.
  • Patients cannot self-refer for the non-insured Mater adult, maternity or paediatric outpatient services.

Services for those with eligible private health insurance:

  • Patients can be referred by their Mater specialist or health professional, external specialist or GP.
  • Patients can self-refer to Mater Health and Wellness (incurs fees)

Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4.30 pm. Please note, the office is closed on weekends and public holidays, and there are no clinical services provided after hours. Our nutrition assistant staff may assist with inpatient dietary requests and special needs during these times.
