Respiratory and Cardiac Services

Respiratory inpatient services

  • assessment and treatment of acute and chronic respiratory conditions
  • specialised cystic fibrosis unit
  • ongoing physiotherapy care post-discharge is arranged where required.

Respiratory outpatient services

  • chronic respiratory condition management and education
  • cystic fibrosis clinic
  • associated continence and pelvic floor dysfunction are addressed via referral to the Continence and Women’s Health physiotherapists.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

  • An eight week outpatient program designed to improve the function of patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
  • The program includes:
    • supervised exercise program
    • education sessions from multi-disciplinary team
    • prescription and education of patients in the use of respiratory equipment and airway clearance techniques
    • prescription of home exercise programs
    • management of respiratory symptoms including shortness of breath and lifestyle/treatment balance.
    • referral to ongoing community based maintenance programs.

Critical Care—Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit

  • to provide ongoing assessment and management for people who are critically ill or who have cardiac disease
  • assist in the prevention of complications in people who are ventilated and/or critically ill.
  • developing and implementing staged cardiac rehabilitation for patients with cardiac disease.

Office hours

Allied Health Reception and Outpatient Services:
Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 4.30pm. Closed on weekends and public holidays.

Inpatient Clinical Services:
Mater Hospital Brisbane: Monday to Sunday, 7.30am to 4.00pm
Mater Mothers Hospitals: Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 7.30am to 1.00pm.

Out of hours evening shift (Monday-Friday) and oncall services are provided across Mater Hospital Brisbane and Mater Mothers Hospitals based on clinical need and medical referral.
