Neonatal and Children's Services

Physiotherapist’s at Mater work closely with children, families and carers to optimise patient outcomes. They provide assessment and treatment for children with or at risk of, developmental delay, musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions, cardiorespiratory conditions and neuromuscular disorders.

These physiotherapy services are available within the Neonatal Units of the Mater Mothers' Hospitals, Mater Children’s Private Brisbane, Clubfoot Clinic at Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Mater Health and Wellness.

How to access our services

Referral

  • Referral from a medical officer, nurse or allied health professional is not generally required to access either inpatient or outpatient children’s physiotherapy services.

Office hours

Allied Health Reception and Outpatient Services:
Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 4.30pm. Closed on weekends and public holidays.

Inpatient Clinical Services

Mater Hospital Brisbane, Mater Children's Private Brisbane: Monday to Sunday, 7.30am to 4.00pm
Mater Mothers Hospitals: Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 7.30am to 1.00pm.

Out of hours oncall services are provided across Mater Adult Hospital, Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Mater Mothers Hospitals based on clinical need and medical referral.

Outpatient clinical services

The physiotherapy staff provide highly specialised outpatient services in the following areas:

  • neuro-developmental
  • musculoskeletal injuries and conditions
  • post-operative orthopaedic rehabilitation
  • clubfoot and lower limb casting
  • neurological rehabilitation
  • acute and chronic cardio-respiratory
  • cerebral palsy
  • paediatric incontinence (managed by the continence and women’s health staff)
  • developmental follow-up for infants born prematurely.

Mater physiotherapy staff are actively involved in the following outpatient clinics:

  • growth and development clinic
  • clubfoot Clinic at Mater Children’s Private Brisbane
  • playgroups – follow-up review clinics for public and private neonates
  • individual assessment and treatment
  • Mater Health and Wellness

Insured physiotherapy outpatient services are available at Clubfoot Clinic at Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Mater Health and Wellness.

Inpatient clinical services

The physiotherapy staff provide specialist inpatient services in the following clinical areas:

  • Mater Children’s Private Brisbane
  • acute medical conditions
  • surgical and orthopaedic conditions
  • babies requiring hospitalisation
  • day unit

Physiotherapists provide:

  • comprehensive assessment and treatment of the presenting condition
  • commence early stages of rehabilitation and treatment
  • development of home exercise program for discharge
  • prescribe appropriate mobility aids where required
  • ongoing physiotherapy care post-discharge is arranged where required.

Community clinical services

Mater paediatric physiotherapy staff provide comprehensive community services through Mater at Home Paediatrics which include the following services:

  • Hospital in the home
  • Post-acute care for children needing follow-up physiotherapy at home or school upon discharge from hospital.
