Mater Psychology

Mater Psychology offers inpatient and outpatient psychology services to adults and families in a number of clinical teams across Mater Hospital Brisbane, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals the Queensland Diabetes Centre and Mater's Health and Wellness Clinic.

Psychologists have specialist skills relevant to the particular clinical area or team. These include clinical psychology and health psychology.

Psychologists provide assessment, diagnostic input, counselling/psychotherapy and a range of therapeutic interventions within the following multidisciplinary teams:

  • Mater Hospital Brisbane
    • Medical oncology, haematology, palliative care
    • Gynae-oncology (Mater Mothers' Hospital)
    • Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Screening Clinic.
  • Mater Mothers’ Hospitals
    • Antenatal, inpatients, brief postnatal, maternal fetal medicine
    • Special care and intensive care nurseries
    • Growth and Development Clinic.

Services are provided for non-insured patients and in some clinical teams for insured patients.

Mater psychologists can help with:

  • assessment of psychological needs and issues
  • management of stress, anxiety, depression, life changes
  • dealing with acute or chronic illness or disease
  • management of pain
  • psychological issues related to pregnancy and parenthood
  • grief and loss
  • psychological issues for young adults dealing with diabetes

How to access our services

Eligibility and referral

Psychology services are available for clients seen within the clinical areas listed. Referrals are prioritised on the basis of clinical need.

Mater Psychology does not offer a general outpatient service and is unable to accept external referrals or self referrals. Clients must be under the care of the teams specified.

Mater Health and Wellness does provide an insured outpatient service for external and self-referrals including:

  • management of stress, anxiety, depression, life changes
  • dealing with illness or pain
  • lifestyle management and weight control
  • grief and loss
  • psychological issues related to pregnancy, parenthood and the developing relationship with your baby
  • family issues and relationship issues.

Referral processes vary within each clinical area.  Clients are usually referred to the psychologist from within their multidisciplinary team—be it medical, nursing, midwifery or other allied health staff.

Office hours

Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The office is closed on weekends and public holidays.
