For general practitioners and specialists

We are proud of the Back Stability Clinic, which represents a successful 10 year partnership between Mater Health Services and The University of Queensland. Our clinic has continued to grow and produce successful clinical outcomes, using an evidence-based approach.
Randomised controlled trials support the use of retraining motor control of muscles that stabilise the spine, such as the transversus abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor and diaphragm. Ultrasound imaging has been shown to be useful for enhancing retraining of motor control of these muscles. However, our treatment goes beyond retraining of motor control. We strive to provide practical solutions to help patients with low back pain manage their condition. This includes practical advice, movement re-education, postural assessment and functional retraining. We are also happy to address issues of joint mobility, physical fitness, other specific musculoskeletal pathology and collaborative pain management when appropriate.
We work closely with you to design a safe, effective and individualised program for your patient. Further benefits to the patient may include improved mood and the fostering of a positive attitude, in line with our overall philosophy of patient self management.
At the Back Stability Clinic, we send all referring doctors a detailed individual report. We strive to communicate well with you to enhance optimal team management of the patient.
