Referral

When you receive a referral from a GP for your child to have a conventional X-ray, you can come directly to the hospital because an appointment is not required (however, you may have to wait a short while during busy periods).

If your child is referred for a more complex radiological study, please phone the Department on +61 7 3163 8311 for an appointment. Most procedures such as ultrasound scan, barium study or CT scan require a specific appointment time to ensure your child's body is appropriately prepared in time for the study (e.g. fasting or drinking plenty before the study).

For all examinations you must remember to bring the completed request form from your child's doctor. You should also bring with you any relevant radiological images which may have been taken before—often the radiologist needs to compare previous imaging with the new examination results so that a full and clinically useful report can be issued.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (a person 18 years or over) coming to and from the hospital.

Services for patients referred for outpatient examinations by their GP or medical specialist are bulk-billed.

The Report

A qualified radiographer performs the X-ray or other study. The images taken are then viewed by a radiologist. Sometimes the radiologist is also present during the test, or conducts the test, especially if the test or suspected problem is particularly complex. The radiologist will write a report on the test and if anything is found that needs urgent treatment, the radiologist will contact your doctor directly.

The images and report will be sent to your referring doctor. If you have been referred by a GP you may be able to take the films and report with you on the day of the study or collect them later—please let our reception staff know if you wish to do so. Likewise, if you have arranged for an immediate follow up appointment, please let us know and we will try to finalise and send the report in time for your appointment.
