The division shares particularly close clinical, educational and research links with pathology, The University of Queensland, the Division of Surgery, the Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI), Mater Private Hospital Brisbane and the Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education. The division has a strong commitment to clinical and basic research. During the last ten years it has developed a number of national clinical trials and is currently involved in a number of national and international studies.

The MMRI conducts clinic trials in collaboration with oncology and apheresis in the day center. The MMRI Biotherapy Research facility is part of the day oncology area on level 10.

The Division of Oncology is currently involved in a range of phase one, two and three clinical trials. These trials include research into prostate, colorectal, breast, lung, melanoma and ovarian (gynaecological) cancers, leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Staff members regularly publish and present research papers at national and international forums.

The Palliative Care Department runs clinical trials aimed at improving the control of pain and symptoms associated with advanced cancer. They are the lead recruitment site in PaCCSC, the national palliative care research network.
