Intensive Care Unit

Mater's Intensive Care Unit is a state-of-the-art 16 bed facility located on Level 5 of the Salmon Building. The ICU cares for critically ill patients with complex and life-threatening medical conditions, including advanced support for peri-operative high-risk surgical patients, obstetric patients and cancer patients.

The ICU has current accreditation as an advanced training facility for the discipline of intensive care medicine, accredited as a C12 facility under the auspices of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).

Visitors

Visiting hours are 10 am–1 pm  and  2 pm–8 pm. The period between 1 pm and 2 pm is a rest period. For further information for visitors and relatives, refer to our Intensive Care Unit brochure.

Patient accommodation

Patient bed areas are well lit and fitted with up-to-date monitoring and equipment.

Medical and clinical team

The ICU is under the expert medical direction of a full-time director supported by up to five fellows of the CICM on a fractional appointment. 

Specialist critical care nursing practice is provided by highly trained nursing staff, supported by a Nurse Unit Manager, Nurse Educator and a Clinical Nurse Consultant. The nursing team enhance their advanced level of competence through continued education. 

Patients, families and carers are further supported by a team of allied health professionals and support services.

All staff aim to meet the needs of critically ill patients and their families in accordance with Mater’s Values of Mercy, Dignity, Quality, Care and Commitment.

Affiliated areas

Mater's ICU works closely with Mater Private Hospital Brisbane’s Intensive Care Unit, Mater Hospital Brisbane’s Cardiology Unit and Cardiovascular Investigations Department, and Mater Mothers’ Hospitals.
