Complex Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic

Doctors and people

A new complex tuberous sclerosis clinic has been started at Mater Children’s Hospital in recognition of the coordination of care required for children significantly affected by tuberous sclerosis (TS).

The clinic, which meets every four months on a Tuesday morning, focuses on the complex developmental, behavioural and neurological issues that accompany tuberous sclerosis, with input from developmental paediatrics, neurology and dermatology.

If needed, cardiology, ophthalmology, renal and genetic reviews can be arranged.

The aim of this clinic is to assist with the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis and to provide input for children affected by complex issues related to TS in an advisory role.

The routine care of children with tuberous sclerosis is best managed by local primary or secondary health care professionals and the role of the complex TS clinic is to provide supplementary support to this management when this is helpful.

Members of the clinic can also provide phone support to local health professionals in relation to the management of TS children within their care.

Referrals to the clinic are accepted from the child’s GP or paediatrician and should include details of all previous assessments and investigations.

Referrals should be directed to: Dr Kate Riney, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist, Neurosciences Unit, Mater Children’s Hospital, South Brisbane, QLD 4101 (or by fax to 07 31631722).
