General Neurology Service

Doctors and people

The General Neurology Service provides care for children with a range of neurological disorders including:

  • cerebral palsy
  • spina bifida
  • neurocutaneous syndromes such as neurofibromatosis types I and II, tuberous sclerosis or Sturge-Weber syndrome
  • movement disorders such as ataxia, dystonia, chorea and tremor
  • neurovascular disorders such as stroke and Moyamoya disease
  • neurodegenerative and neurometabolic disorders such as:
    • adrenoleucodystrophy
    • infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy
    • neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis
    • lysosomal storage disorders
    • glucose transporter defects
    • mitochondrial disorders
  • structural brain abnormalities such as lissencephaly, porencephaly, hemimegalencephaly.

The General Neurology Service provides a holistic approach to investigating and managing children with complex neurological disorders by working closely with other Mater Children’s Hospital services.

Mater Children’s Hospital runs six weekly General Neurology Clinics. There is one combined Queensland Paediatric Neurology Service Clinic that alternates between the Royal and Mater Children’s Hospitals.
