National Prescribing Service Medicines Line

The NPS Medicines Line service provides an avenue for consumers to obtain independent, accurate, up-to-date information about their prescription, over-the-counter, and complementary (herbal/'natural'/vitamin/mineral) medicines.

To contact the NPS Medicines Line, phone 1300 88 763 between 9am - 6pm, Monday to Friday, Australian Eastern Standard Time. You can also visit the website at: http://www.nps.org.au.

NPS Medicines Line can help you by:

• answering your questions or concerns
• helping you get copies of the Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) leaflets for your prescription medicines
• referring you to reliable services and organisations, for example, to support organisations for people with your health condition, or to an emergency service such as the Poisons Information Centre
• encouraging you to talk to your doctor and pharmacist, who are best placed to discuss your medicines in the context of your personal health situation.

NPS Medicines Line can not:

• advise you in an emergency. If you have emergency concerns about your medicines arising from an overdose or suspected poisoning, call the Poisons Information Centre, 24 hours a day, on 131 126. For general emergencies call 000, 24 hours a day, and ask for an ambulance
• replace the information and advice provided by your health professionals
• provide clinical opinions on the medicines recommended by your health professionals
• provide second opinions about your clinical care
• comment on the appropriateness of your clinical management.
