The Mater Emotional Health Unit has a range of mental health professionals who treat children, adolescents, adults, couples and families for a broad range of mental health issues.

Located in a newly refurbished area that includes consult suites, a dedicated reception area with private billing facilities and comfortable waiting areas, the unit has been designed to promote privacy and be as inviting as possible.

The psychiatry, psychology and social work health professionals in the unit are accredited at Mater and are able to seamlessly refer to other Mater specialists when required.

Currently under development and due to open in 2016, will be adolescent inpatient facilities and day programs for adolescents and young adults. Admissions to these services will always be under the care of a treating psychiatrist.


To see one of our Emotional Health Unit psychiatrists you will need a referral from a General Practitioner or other treating doctor.

You can see one of our psychologists or social workers without a referral however you will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate. To access the rebate your General Practitioner will need to complete a Mental Health Care Plan as part of their referral process. It is important to bring your referral to your first appointment.

Fees and rebates

The fees charged by the health professionals in the Emotional Health Unit are set by the individual practitioners and are payable to them at the time of consultation. EFTPOS facilities are available at the Emotional Health Unit reception.

Medicare or health fund rebates may be claimed if eligible. Your Medicare claim can be forwarded online.

Additional fees may apply for longer appointments and report writing however your health professional will inform you if this is likely to occur.



Dr Bill Bor is an experienced child and adolescent psychiatrist who treats a range of mental health difficulties. There is currently a waiting list to see Dr Bill Bor. 

Dr Oreste Theodoratos provides a private practice consultationliaison assessment and treatment service for persons 18 years and over who may be experiencing psychological symptoms such as depression or anxiety in the context of a diagnosed medical condition. He has special interests in neuropsychiatry. Dr Oreste Theodoratos is currently taking referrals.


Our psychologists can assist with diagnosis and treatment of a range of mental health conditions in children, adolescents and adults.  The therapy offered may assist with management of stress, depression, mood and anxiety and relationship difficulties including family based relationships.

Mental health social work

Our accredited mental health social workers provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment services to individuals, couples, families and groups who are experiencing a range of mental health issues.  They help clients to resolve their presenting psychological problems, and associated social and environmental issues, with the aim of improving their quality of life.
