Our Services

In addition to providing inpatient services for young people in hospital, the Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane also provide young adults with access to specialist health clinics, professional emotional health support, as well as free, confidential services for young people who experience issues with substance use.

Depending on the service/s you require access to, you may need a referral from your GP or medical professional to the Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane. Our range of services is outlined below in more detail.

Young Adult Inpatient Services

The Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane inpatient ward provides dedicated care for young adults aged 16 to 25 years. Located on level 7 of the Salmon Building, the young adult ward is a custom designed care environment that offers Mater patients a unique experience designed to meet their health care needs. The ward cares for young people requiring medical and surgical (public) admission . Ward staff can arrange for specialist staff from supportive programs to see you on the ward.  Mater doctors can also admit young people as private patients to the ward.

Patients are able to recuperate and recover with access to:
• Art therapy
• Wi-Fi,
• Free to air TV
• Indoor and outdoor social areas
• Gym
• Access to school teachers


Emergencies: If you need urgent treatment, please go to the Emergency
Department of your closest hospital. The Mater Hospital Brisbane Emergency Department offers a 24-hour comprehensive emergency service staffed by experienced emergency doctors, nurses, training registrars and house officers.

Non Urgent: For non-urgent treatment and care, your medical professional is required to send a referral to Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane.

Young Adult Outpatient Clinics

Mater’s Young Adult Outpatient Clinics are located on level 4 of the Salmon Building and offer patients aged between 16 and 25 a unique space to meet with their Mater specialist to discuss their health treatment plans and ongoing care.

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Respiratory
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Gynaecology
  • Mater Young Adult Support Unit
  • Nephrology – Renal Transplant Clinic
  • After Cancer Therapy Service
  • Queensland Centre for Intellectual and Developmental Disability (QCIDD)
  • Queensland Interdisciplinary Craniofacial Service
  • Rheumatology
  • Stuttering
  • Urology

Young people attending the above clinics can also access the Thrive Day program and free Legal clinic.


Your medical professional is required to send a referral to the Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane. Referrals for young adults will be allocated to the appropriate clinic during the triage process.

Emotional Health Unit

The Emotional Health Unit has a number of Mental Health professionals who provide assessment and treatment for young people aged 13 and above who require treatment of depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other mental health conditions.

Clarence Street

Located in South Brisbane, Clarence Street is a free, confidential service supporting young people to make positive changes to their alcohol and other drug use. Clarence Street offers a range of programs, including:

  • A residential program supporting young people aged 13-18 years to safely withdraw from substances
  • A community team providing specialist youth work to individual young people aged 13-25 years in the greater Brisbane area
  • A day program offering onsite vocational training, therapeutic group work, recreational activities, and support to prepare for work (for young people aged 13-25 years)

Young Adult Support Unit (YASU)

The Young Adult Support Unit (YASU) is a service that provides young people assistance with emotional needs and support when managing their health. The YASU team are based in the outpatient clinic and your treating team can easily organise for you to see them, sometimes on the same day as your appointment. You’ll just need to ask your Mater treating specialist to refer you to YASU. 

Legal Clinics

Mater Young Adult Health Centre has a legal clinic, which young people can access for advice during university semesters. Please ask your nurse for more information.

Mater Youth Family Counselling Service

This service provides care and support to young people demonstrating offending behaviours. Referrals are accepted via the youth justice system.
