Vision

Mater Pathology is a leading tertiary referral centre committed to the delivery of pathology services of excellence in diagnosis and consultation, the advancement of scientific knowledge through research and education and the values of Mercy.

Business

Mater Pathology operates a highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art pathology laboratory with medical, scientific, technical and administrative staff in premises at South Brisbane as part of Mater's complex. The organisational infrastructure supports the quality-certified delivery of a comprehensive clinical diagnostic pathology service to many clients within Mater Health Services and the community.

Mater Pathology provides 24-hour analytical and consultative services to Mater tertiary teaching hospital complex, Mater private hospitals and off-site community practices. The hospital complex has adult, paediatric and maternity services and provides education and placements for undergraduate medical, nursing and allied health staff. Tertiary level adult, womens’ and children’s private hospitals are collocated with the public hospitals.The Queensland Cord Blood Bank at Mater operates as an integral part of Mater Pathology.

Quality of Service

All areas of the pathology service are accredited by the NATA to ISO 15189:2004 under the accreditation scheme of NATA and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia. In addition, the pathology service has a Quality Management System certified by NATA Certification Services to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000. Finally, Mater Pathology is a TGA licensed facility for testing services for the Queensland Cord Bank at Mater.

Mater Pathology Quality System actively supports the delivery of customer-focused services to all clients.

Education and Research

Medical and scientific staff of Mater Pathology are involved with the advancement of scientific knowledge through education and research in association with clinical researchers, the University of Queensland, Griffith University, the Queensland University of Technology and Mater Medical Research Institute. Mater Pathology provides laboratory support for approved clinical trials. Mater Pathology staff participate in clinical meetings, ground rounds and collaborate with other clinical service providers. The Director of Microbiology in Mater Pathology is actively involved with the Infection Control Committees of the hospitals of Mater Health Services.
