This course is designed for individuals who are contemplating entering the workforce as a pathology specimen collector/phlebotomist. The course includes lectures, practical demonstrations, workshops, interactive tutorials and communication sessions.

All participants are provided with two weeks of vocational placement with prospective employers.

Mater Health Services consist of several hospitals, specialties and off-site facilities and all students will be provided one full week practical experience in the working environment of Mater Hospital and a second week off-site in the private field.

Program entry requirements:

  • no previous experience or qualifications required
  • participants are to be 18 years or older.

Cost $3000

Includes resources, morning and afternoon tea, staff parking rates and Senior First Aid course.

Duration

The course will be conducted over a period of five weeks.

Full time lectures 2 weeks 8 am–4.30 pm, Monday–Friday
Vocational placement, lectures and workshops 2 weeks 8 am–4 pm, Monday–Friday
Self directed learning (assignment) 1 week Assignment completed off campus

One week self directed learning (assignment) is completed off campus. Participants are not required to attend during this time.

Subjects covered

  • procedure for collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture
  • NATA—accreditation and quality assurance, AS/NZS ISO 2000, ISO 15189:2003
  • procedures for handling and transporting pathology specimens
  • standard additional precautions
  • first aid
  • communication in the workplace
  • comply with infection control policies and procedures
  • collect pathology specimens other than blood
  • identify and respond to clinical risks associated with pathology specimen collection
  • quality assurance, including accreditation to ISO 15189:2003 and certification to ISO 9001:2000.

Award to be given to participants

On successful completion of the course, the particpant will receive the Certificate III in Pathology (HLT32607) which will carry the Nationally Recognised Training logo. Should a particpant leave the course prior to completion, the particpant will receive a Statement of Attainment for any units of competence completed.
