About the department

Mater Health Services Speech Pathology Department offers inpatient and outpatient assessment and intervention services to infants, children, adolescents and adults who present with communication and swallowing difficulties. The service is a recognised centre of excellence in the management of neonatal and paediatric dysphagia and fluency disorders.

The Speech Pathology Department provides services to the:

The speech pathologist's role is:

  • to assess, diagnose and treat communication and swallowing difficulties
  • to offer training, counselling and support to the individual and caregivers
  • to establish an alternative means of communication when appropriate
  • to liaise with community-based services to ensure ongoing management when appropriate
  • to provide consultation services to community professionals in tertiary caseload areas
  • to engage in undergraduate and post graduate student education.
