Mater Respite Service is an initiative of the Australian Government, funded through the National Respite for Carers Program, and is auspiced by Mater Health Services.

Since 1995, Mater Respite Services, in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Mater Health Services and the Sisters of Mercy, has provided coordinated support to carers providing care for people with dementia.

The service aims to enhance the independence and well-being of both the carer and care recipient, enabling the carer to continue in their role. Our dedicated team, including a coordinator, support staff and volunteers, provide respite to carers through the following services and activities.

Services Provided include:

• centre-based day, extended hours and overnight respite programs
• transport
• carer support group meetings
• therapeutic art counselling
• referrals to community organisations
• access to allied health services
• medication support
• complementary therapies
• education
• pastoral care
• transitional carer support following residential transfer or bereavement.

Available activities include:

• art therapy, including ceramics, folk art and stencilling
• body balance (light stretches/exercises)
• pet therapy
• games, including board games, card games, billiards and table tennis
• reading, listening to tapes, socialising, in-house movies
• manicures, foot spas and hairdressing appointments
• special occasion functions, including Christmas, Easter, Melbourne Cup
• cooking for special occasions such as Australia Day and ANZAC Day
• community outings and day trips.
