Social Work

Services

The Social Work Department offers services to patients, their families and carers for both inpatients and outpatients at Mater.

Social workers are located in the three public hospitals—Mater Adult Hospital, Mater Children’s Hospital and Mater Mother’s Hospital.

Social work services are also available to Mater Private Rehabilitation Unit, Mater Mothers' Private Hospital and Mater Children’s Private Hospital.

How Can We Assist You?

Any change to your health can impact significantly not only on the patient, but also your extended family or support network. This can be a stressful and confusing time for everyone involved.

Social workers are skilled professionals who work as part of your treating team. We have specialised skills in interpersonal relationships, grief and loss, crisis intervention (e.g. domestic violence, trauma), transitional care for the elderly, child safety, child development and community liaison.

Social workers can support you and your family adjust during this period by:

  • offering individual, couple or family counselling
  • respecting your individual needs
  • exploring better ways to manage
  • providing advocacy in hospital and in the community
  • assisting you to navigate the complex hospital system
  • facilitating a smooth transition back home
  • providing advice on community resources
  • referral to community based agencies or counsellors
  • providing practical assistance.

What Happens When I See a Social Worker?

The social worker will have a confidential interview with you to help identify and prioritise the presenting issues. They understand that everyone is unique and will want to understand things from your perspective.

Together you will explore options to the problems you may be facing and they will assist you to find the solution that is right for you.

How Do I Contact a Social Worker?

You can contact social work directly, either in person or by telephone (see contact details below) or you can ask your doctor, nurse or allied health professional to page a social worker who will come to see you.
