The department provides inpatient and outpatient services to both public and private patients. Our dietitians specialise in a range of areas including paediatric nutrition, obstetric nutrition and the nutritional management of specific conditions such as cystic fibrosis, coeliac disease, inborn errors of metabolism, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes and weight management, food allergies and food intolerances. We also provide nutrition support and education for patients receiving treatment for cancer and before and after surgery.
Dietitians are available from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (see contact details below). Inpatient referrals can be made directly to the appropriate dietitian via the pager system. Public outpatient referrals must be written on a Mater Hospital referral form and can be sent via internal mail, or faxed to +61 7 3163 2442. Private outpatient referrals may be sent to Mater Health and Wellness Clinic, suite 2.3, level 2 Mater Private Clinic or faxed to +61 7 3010 5745.
There are also dietitians located at Queensland Diabetes Centre and within D.A.A.R.T..
The Nutrition and Dietetics Department also provide advice and nutrition guidelines to the Department of Foodservices in relation to therapeutic diets for hospital patients. We work closely with food service staff to meet individual dietary requirements from hospital menus. Nutrition Assistants are an important link between the dietitians and the kitchen. They ensure individual patients’ nutritional, cultural and taste preferences are met as closely as possible. They are available from 6 am to 6 pm, seven days a week (see contact details below).
