Growth and Development Research

Since its establishment in 1978, The Growth and Development Unit has become recognised nationally and internationally for its work. Infants attend Mater Hospitals’ Growth and Development Clinic at 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 2 years and 4 years of age, with additional assessments as indicated.

Medical specialists, psychologists and physiotherapists check the child’s growth and development, perform psychological evaluations and arrange for hearing tests. The specialist team also provides education, support and encouragement to parents of these preterm infants. Many families seek ongoing advice and support for up to 20 years after the birth of their high risk child.

Studies have indicated that by their late teens, the majority of these children have a positive self esteem, even though they continue to encounter ongoing minor problems. Mater is now focusing its research efforts to give these children an even brighter future.
