In September 2006, Mater Private Hospital launched its new CardioVascular Unit (CVU) to provide for the cardiovascular needs of the community.

Boasting an outstanding clinical team, state-of-the-art technology and world-class doctors, Mater Private CVU is an outstanding addition to Mater’s already impressive list of clinical innovations.

Since becoming the first private hospital in Brisbane, Mater Private Hospital has continued to lead the way in provision of exceptional care for the wider Queensland community. With our new CVU we are extending our capacity and enhancing our ability to address Mater's Mission—to meet unmet needs.

With around 3.67 million Australians affected by heart, stroke and vascular disease, Mater saw an opportunity to provide for the needs of a growing list of patients. Now, with our partners in other not-for-profit hospitals around Brisbane, we can provide a comprehensive cardiovascular service for the wider community.

Mater Private cardiovascular service was literally built from the ground up. Liz Wheeler, nurse manager of the unit was employed well before the unit opened to contribute to the design and commissioning of the catheter labs.

As a result, Mater Private boasts a clinically superior layout which benefits visiting specialists, nursing staff and patients. The unit also features state-of-the-art technology and a unique software package to assist in recording and retrieving patient data.

Transition Programme

The CardioVascular Transition Programme has been developed to assist registered nurses in the CardioVascular Unit (CVU) to develop from beginning practitioners to competent clinicians in the cardiac and vascular catheterisation environment.
