WallyMater Children’s Private Brisbane Assistant in Nursing Walter (Wally) Boiga has a true passion for nursing which started early in life as he grew up in a family of nurses providing him with support and encouragement to achieve his goals.

Wally achieved his Diploma of Nursing through Mater Education in 2014 and has since been working between Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Mater Childcare for the past four years.

“I have just resigned from Mater Childcare and am dedicating my time to working in Mater Children’s Private Brisbane while I am currently doing further study,” Wally said.

“There have definitely been some challenges along the way, going back to study as a mature-age student I have found it difficult to maintain a balance between work, life and study however I am working on achieving my goal of being a paediatric nurse.

“I believe you never let obstacles get in the way of your passion and your goals. I am so grateful I have a job and the opportunity to work and I will keep pursuing this.”

While working in Mater Children’s Private Brisbane Wally said he has received wonderful support and mentorship from the nurses and clinicians in the department who provide him with incredible learning opportunities.

“It’s a great environment to be in, we are all working with the same purpose and they consistently uphold the Mater values. They have been great role models for me in my career and you feel like you are genuinely part of a team,” he said.

“This is important to me as I grew up in a family of female nurses; my mother and grandmother were nurses who were strong role models for me so it has always been a passion of mine to continue this tradition of nursing.

“I would like to see more men in nursing and it takes a particular type of person to do this job, you need to love what you do while being a kind, caring and compassionate person.”

Wally is keen to continue his study this year and work towards his goal of being a paediatric nurse in Mater Children’s Private Brisbane.
