Diploma of Nursing graduate embraces opportunity

Recent graduate of Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing Harrison Schulz is set to commence his nursing career at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane this month, helping day surgery patients in the Welcome Lounge.

Harrison chose to study nursing after spending a large portion of his childhood receiving treatment for epilepsy; during those hospital visits he saw firsthand the impact nurses have on people’s lives.

“I was always in and out of hospital, receiving tests and treatment. I wanted to become a nurse to help people in need, as I was once in that position,” Harrison said.

After researching a number of education providers, Harrison chose to study the full-time Diploma of Nursing program at Mater Education. His decision to study at Mater was ultimately based on Mater’s reputation and practical learning environment.

“There’s a lot to learn in 18 months. It’s fast paced so you have to keep on top of it, but the educators were really helpful and supportive throughout the course,” Harrison said.

“The course has a really good balance of theory and practical work that made it easier to join the dots. By semester three, the clinical practices and policies were drilled into us and we understood the rationale behind every new skill. It was great to feel everything come together.”

Harrison felt the authenticity of the course helped to prepare him for the working in the real world.

“Our first time learning in simulation was nerve-wracking, but as I got used to it I realised it’s invaluable training for real life.

“Studying at the hospital puts you in a professional mindset from the get go. The policies, procedures and values of Mater were ingrained in us from the start. Taking the values from the classroom to the ward has ensured they are embedded in our practice.”

Training and working as a young male nurse in a female-dominated profession can have its challenges, according to Harrison.

“I’ve had patients request a female nurse, but I can’t be offended by that. As a nurse, my job is to make patients feel comfortable and supported; I just take a step back so someone else can assist. The way I see it, it’s good to have the option of both male and female nurses. It’s good to have balance.”

Harrison is excited to start the next chapter in his nursing career at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane, as part of Mater’s graduate nursing program, and is grateful for the opportunity afforded through Mater Education.

“Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing program has a strong reputation for a reason. I feel confident and ready to start my new role in day surgery, and am excited to apply everything I’ve learnt,” he said.
