Winter Gala brings glamour to Jimbour

More than 400 people from the Dalby community attended Cocktails for a Cure Winter Gala at historical Jimbour House to raise vital funds for ovarian cancer research.

With a black-tie and gown crowd and an air of sophistication to go with its grand ballroom Hangar, it truly was a glamorous affair.

Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh hosted the event with remarks from an array of voices including event founder Edwina McVeigh and Mater Foundation Professor John Hooper, the consistent themes of community, awareness and action were particularly poignant.

Edwina lost her mother Dianne to ovarian cancer in 2008 and has since taken an active role engaging her community to help raise awareness and funds in support of research, raising a total of $121 000 to date.

“It’s important for all women to get to know the symptoms of ovarian cancer and to take action; anyone with symptoms should be referred to a specialist as quickly as possible,” Edwina said.

When Mater Research Professor John Hooper took to the stage he talked about the impact of the Foundation’s work and the importance of fundraisers such as this one.

“Cocktails for a Cure fundraiser has made a remarkable difference supporting ovarian cancer research,” Professor Hooper said.

“The fantastic results from last year’s fundraiser reflect how a collaborative effort from individuals, businesses and the community is essential to drive scientific advances and get us closer to a screening tool and better treatments,” he said.

The generosity from sponsors and the business community provided a notable line up of auction and raffle prizes which were well supported on the night. All funds raised from the Winter Gala event will be donated to the Mater Foundation in support of ovarian cancer research.
