Dr Hirst has had a distinguished career in a wide variety of medical roles since completing his urological training in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada in 1975. He was a transplant surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for almost 15 years and in urological practice as a Visiting Medical Officer at Mater as well as in private practice until 2004.

Geof currently chairs the Digital Health Committee and the Clinical Safety and Excellence Committee at Mater and sits on the Finance Committee as well as the Human Resources, Culture and Nominations Committee.
