Dr O’Brien began his career as a general practitioner in rural NSW and Queensland before co-founding the international risk management organisation Cognitive Institute – where he has served as Medical Director since 1999.
He is a widely recognised international expert trainer and consultant in clinical risk management. He has developed courses in clinical leadership, communication skills, and quality and safety, which have been delivered to over 100,000 clinicians in 13 countries. He also serves as the International Medical Education Consultant to the Medical Protection Society in the United Kingdom, the world’s largest medical indemnity organisation.
He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has held an extensive range of medical governance and leadership roles in Queensland, NSW and internationally. Some of these roles include Queensland representative- National Curriculum Committee, RACGP Training Program; Vice President - New England Division of General Practice; Executive - Rural Doctors Association of Queensland; and Queensland Representative -National GP Supervisors Association.
Dr O’Brien has been a member of the Mater Clinical Advisory Board – Mater’s peak dedicated patient safety and quality governance committee since its inception in 2016. In 2016 he was awarded the Queensland President’s Award by the Australian College of Health Service Management and Queensland Health for his services to healthcare.
