Ms Karen Roach—Member, Clinical Safety & Excellence Committee

Karen trained as a nurse and midwife, completing her midwifery program at Mater Mothers in 1980, and is a graduate from the Business School at Central Queensland University. Karen has previous experience as a Chief Executive in health services in both Queensland and New Zealand, managing regional services in Rockhampton and Toowoomba before taking on the role of Southern Zone Manager in Queensland Health.

As CE of Northland District Health Board in New Zealand, Karen also took on the national roles of lead CE of the Employee Relations Portfolio, leading the industrial relations strategy on behalf of the 20 District Health Boards. Karen was Chair of the MOU Committee which was the sector relationship committee working with the RDA (Union representing the resident medical officer workforce) and was a founding board member of Health Workforce New Zealand, reporting to the Minister for Health NZ on workforce development in the sector.

Karen currently is a health consultant focusing on locum CE and COO roles as well as consulting to health services on operational and governance issues, including quality and safety. She is also a Learning Set Facilitator with HardyGroupInt, working with executives and senior health leaders to help them stay connected to what’s happening in the sector across Australia and New Zealand.
