Pathways for high school students to a career in healthcare

Mater Education proudly offers Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) to students in years 10, 11 and 12 who are interested in a future in healthcare.

Through the tailored program, students can kickstart their career and gain nationally recognised healthcare qualifications, while still in school. Students have the opportunity to study on-site, in a real hospital environment at one of three Mater Education hubs. They gain first-hand experience in an acute hospital setting, working alongside qualified healthcare professionals and establish a solid foundation on which to build their healthcare career after Year 12.

For Charlie, a 2020 VETiS student, the program is giving her a taste of what her future career may look like.

“When I finish high school, I want to go onto University and study a Bachelor of Midwifery. Through the VETiS program, I am able to get an introduction into the field, and feel confident in the career path I want to take after school.”

Following the completion of the VETiS program, students also have the opportunity to continue study through Mater Education, having gained credits for a range of courses. We spoke to Jordy, a 2018 VETiS student who enrolled in Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing program after graduating high school.

“The VETiS program was a real game-changer for me in my nursing career. I knew I wanted to continue my studies with Mater Education as I had such a good experience during VETiS. The campus, educators and concepts are all familiar to me, and I felt supported to continue my journey with Mater Education.”

VETiS students who complete the Certificate III component of the course also have the option to jump straight into the healthcare workforce after school, in a range of professions such as assistant in nursing, assistant in physiotherapy, assistance in social work and more.

The opportunities following VETiS are endless. We encourage anyone interested in this exciting offering to watch the below video and explore more here.
