A ‘singing surgeon’ is bringing joy and laughter to patients at Mater Hospital Brisbane, many of whom have been impacted by South East Queensland’s devastating floods.

Visiting bedsides during his daily rounds with a flashing gold microphone, breast and endocrine surgeon Dr Geoff Muduioa is bringing smiles to patients’ faces at Mater Hospital Brisbane and Mater Private Hospital Springfield.

Originally from the Solomon Islands, Dr Muduioa serenades patients before and after their surgeries.

“I like to sing to my patients because it makes them less anxious and helps calm them down,” Dr Muduioa said.

“I have always loved music. There’s always music playing in the theatre when I’m operating.

“Growing up the Pacific Islands, singing is part of the culture. We sing all the time, even from a very young age.”

Dr Muduioa admitted his singing was not pitch perfect, but said his patients recovering from breast, thyroid, and general surgical procedures appreciated his enthusiasm.

“It does not matter if we sing out of key. What matters is the joy we experience and the joy the song brings to my patients,” he said.

His choice of tunes has united his colleagues in what has been a challenging time following the floods.

“They like singing along with me,” he smiled.

Wynnum Manly patient Gavin Daniell said Dr Muduioa sat by his bedside and performed a song making him feel less nervous about his hernia operation.

“It’s just top of the day,” Mr Daniell said. “I was slightly affected by the floods but this really helped take my mind off things for a moment.”

Mater Private Hospital Springfield theatre floor coordinator Sue Richardson said Dr Muduioa’s singing brightened her day.

“All the patients just love it,” she said. “They laugh, and even request songs.

“He definitely gives it his all and he’s passionate about how he delivers it.

“You know when Dr Geoff is operating in the theatre as you can here the reggae music playing. It’s a really good vibe.”
