Celebrating International Nurses Day – Mary Rex

Registered Nurse Mary Rex began her career in India, but this year she will complete a decade of service to the community at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton.

“I love this community,” Mary said.

“Mater was my first job after moving to Australia and I am grateful for all the opportunity it has given me to grow.

“I’m proud to say I am a Mater girl and I love working here!”

Inspired by her mother, who is also a nurse, Mary knew she wanted a role in which she cared for others and so underwent nurse training in India.

She began her career at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton working on the paediatric ward. In recent years she has stepped up to the challenging and rewarding role of After-Hours Nurse Manager.

“My role serves a crucial function for both patients and staff after-hours,” she said.

“If doctors, nurses, patients or their relatives have an issue – whether it’s clinical or not – I am their troubleshooter and will find a way forward or resolution for them.

“I love my role as it gives me the opportunity to develop and use my problem-solving techniques and critical thinking.

“Our facility features five operating theatres, a private emergency service and a wide range of specialised clinical services, so there are many opportunities and avenues for me to make a difference for the patients in my community.”
