Respiratory Medicine

Mater Hospital Brisbane Respiratory Medicine Department is committed to providing patients and their families with the highest level of care for all respiratory conditions.

Our team provides a full range of general and specialist respiratory care for patients through the Mater Hospital Brisbane Adult Respiratory Unit, the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit and the Mater Young Adult Health Centre, providing comprehensive care for all patients aged from 16 years.

Facilities

The Respiratory Medicine Department and Sleep Department comprise of four consultant physicians, a senior respiratory registrar, a respiratory nurse practitioner, allied health support and a respiratory research team from Mater Research.

We provide both inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and management of complex respiratory and sleep conditions, utilising facilities for acute ward based non-invasive ventilation, complex lung function testing, integrated cardiopulmonary exercise testing, radiology, flexible bronchoscopy including Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS),  as well as pulmonary rehabilitation. The department also includes a weekly multidisciplinary lung cancer clinic. We currently offer four general respiratory clinics per week, a young adult respiratory clinic, a specialised sleep clinic and two adult cystic fibrosis clinics.

Surgery for the treatment of lung cancer and diagnosis of other respiratory conditions can be conducted at Mater in collaboration with our cardiothoracic surgical teams.

The respiratory department is committed to research into general respiratory conditions and cystic fibrosis, and continues to have an active research program, integrating both investigator driven research as well as pharmaceutical funded studies.

Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit

The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mater Hospital Brisbane is the regional adult cystic fibrosis service for Brisbane’s south and surrounding areas. The unit provides a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of cystic fibrosis patients and is comprised of dedicated chest and endocrine physicians, a cystic fibrosis nurse practitioner to facilitate care-planning, physiotherapists, dieticians, social workers, a diabetes educator and a respiratory scientist.

Our overriding goal is to help our cystic fibrosis patients to remain as well as possible so that they can enjoy the important things in life. We aim to achieve this by developing an effective partnership between patients and the cystic fibrosis team. Our multidisciplinary team ensures that individualised, effective treatment programs are tailored to suit each and every patient.

We contribute to the Cystic Fibrosis National Data Registry, which now publishes information on patient outcomes from all Australian cystic fibrosis centres on the Cystic Fibrosis Australia website.
