Mater Speech Pathology

Mater Speech Pathology offers inpatient and outpatient assessment and intervention services to infants, children, adolescents and adults who present with communication and swallowing difficulties. The service is a recognised centre of excellence in the management of neonatal and paediatric dysphagia, and fluency disorders in adolescents and adults.

Mater Speech Pathology provides services to:

The role of a speech pathologist is to:

  • assess, diagnose and treat communication and swallowing difficulties
  • offer training, counselling and support to the individual and caregivers
  • establish an alternative means of communication when appropriate
  • liaise with community-based services to ensure ongoing management when appropriate
  • provide consultation services to community professionals in tertiary caseload areas
  • engage in undergraduate and postgraduate student education.

How to access our services

Eligibility

Inpatients of Mater Hospital Brisbane, Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Mater Private Rehabilitation Unit are eligible for inpatient speech pathology services.

Eligibility for outpatient services and specialty clinics varies.

Costs 


There is no charge for Medicare card holders attending outpatient speech pathology appointments through Mater Hospital Brisbane. Insured outpatient services arranged via Mater Health and Wellness will incur a fee.
