Mater surgeons have paid homage to their long-time colleague Dr John Bingley on his retirement, saying he has left a legacy of compassion, excellence and innovation. 

Mater Director of Medical Services Professor Chris Pyke worked with Dr Bingley, a vascular surgeon, for two decades and said it was his technical prowess and his generosity of spirit that set him apart from others. 

“The vascular part of his work is obviously excellent, but the most important part of his legacy is that he’s been transformative for Mater’s culture,” Dr Pyke said. 

“He established audit meetings where we all come together, discuss our complications, support each other, and provide learning opportunities in a non-judgmental team environment.” 

Mater vascular surgeon Dr Danny Hagley said Dr Bingley, a former Director of Surgery at Mater, shared his extensive knowledge and expertise openly and honestly. 

“He is someone who’s been a mentor for a lot of surgeons within Mater and is one of the most caring and compassionate doctors I know,” Dr Hagley said. 

Mater Director of General Surgery Dr Christopher Allan has also been a longtime colleague of Dr Bingley. 

“To be the very best, you need a quiet inner confidence and resolve; you don’t need the bluff and the bluster,” said Dr Allan. 

“John was also able to get the work-life balance right. He focuses on living life. 

“That is what John taught us, and I will miss him for those reasons.”
