The Mater Kidney Health Service in South Brisbane offers specialist care to patients 16 years and over living with kidney disease, and is available for public patients, private patients, young adults (age 16 - 25 years), and international patients and holiday makers.

We are a tertiary level kidney service (level 5 clinical framework), providing inpatient and outpatient hospital based care, and dialysis through units located at South Brisbane and Brookwater. Having a level 5 clinical framework means our teams are trained to care for most complex cases, guaranteeing a high level of care by qualified and specialised multidisciplinary teams including:

  • Consultant nephrologists (kidney specialists)
  • specialist nephrology/kidney nurses
  • haemodialysis nurses
  • clinical psychologist
  • dietician
  • pharmacist
  • pathology
  • radiology
  • support staff

Through this close collaboration of healthcare professionals, you are assured continuity of care at each of our locations, supporting your health, emotional, social and educational needs.

To gain access to the Mater Kidney Health Service you will need a referral from your doctor to either the Mater Nephrology Outpatient Clinic (public patients) or to one of the private consultant nephrologists affiliated with the service. For more information on referring a private patient to the service your doctor can visit materonline.org.au.

Haemodialysis

Mater offers a facility based haemodialysis service in partnership with Fresenius Kidney Care Australia at Mater South Brisbane campus and at Mater Health Centre Brookwater, tailored to meet the needs of each patient.

The dialysis units are readily accessible with easy parking and offer a spacious and light environment. The clinics' haemodialysis machines have options for haemodiafiltration (HDF) and high flux haemodialysis, and dedicated kidney haemodialysis nurses ensure that expert clinical care is delivered to every patient.

Private haemodialysis

Added benefits for private haemodialysis patients include dedicated and complementary patient parking and access to free Wi-Fi, in addition to your own television screen and entertainment package. Mater also provides our private patients with a welcome pack at the first treatment.

As a private patient you will receive private consultations both within the dialysis unit, and in private consulting suites by your specialist. These consultations include a comprehensive review of dialysis prescription, review and maintenance of dialysis access and review of regular blood tests, dialysis adequacy and kidney medications.

You will also be able to request a treatment day and time that is most convenient for you.

Holidaying and international patients

Mater accepts patients holidaying from around Australia or international for both short and long term dialysis, and is available to appropriately insured or self-funding patients.
