Biography

Dr Ian Young is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. 

After obtaining his degree in dentistry at the University of Queensland he worked as a dentist including a short period in private practice before pursuing a keen interest in Rugby League while living in the south of France. He also played Rugby Union for the London Irish club for four years. 

Dr Young continued his dental career for several years in England before entering a masters program in Oral Surgery at the Eastman Dental Hospital (London). 

On completing his postgraduate degree and obtaining a fellowship from The College of Surgeons in Ireland, he completed a further 18 months of training at The Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. Dr Young returned to Australia in 1991 to complete two years senior registrar training in Adelaide, only to then undertake a Medical Degree at the University of Adelaide.

On obtaining his medical degree he returned to Queensland to live on the Sunshine Coast, completing his medical internship and then establishing the first oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist practice on the Sunshine Coast, which remains his base today.

Dr Young has provided oral and maxillofacial services in Gladstone for nearly 20 years. His special interests include orthognathic surgery, and he has almost 30 years’ experience in placing dental implants.

Dr Young has also travelled on a number of occasions to the Philippines and China to participate as a volunteer surgeon to provide cleft lip and palate surgery.
