Biography

Prof Darren Walters is a structural interventional Cardiologist and has been one of the pioneers of structural interventions in Australia such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement and percutaneous mitral valve repair and replacement.

He is Director of Cardiology at The Prince Charles Hospital and Visiting Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Brisbane (Holy Spirit Northside Hospital).

He has previous experience as Executive Director of both The Prince Charles and the Royal Brisbane Hospitals. He was previously Executive Director of the Heart and Lung Services of Metro North Health service incorporating five hospitals. He is a graduate of the University of Queensland and trained at The Royal Brisbane Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital and then as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Interventional Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland. He has held many clinical leadership roles including past Chair of the Interventional Working Group of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, deputy Chair of the Advanced Training Committee in Cardiology, Chair of the TAVI ACOR Registry and the Cardiac Society representative to the Australian Resuscitation Council. He has served a number of committees and professional service roles within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the International Liaison Committee On resuscitation task force on ACS-myocardial infarction.

His interests include innovative technologies, clinical and translational research. He has been involved in International prospective randomised clinical trials and investigator driven translational research and is the author of more than 200 peer reviewed papers, abstracts, international guidelines and book chapters. As an invited expert, he has been a guest speaker in more than half a dozen countries overseas including the USA, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and China.

Professor Walters also visits Mater Hospital at Rockhampton each month.
