Telehealth has transformed the healthcare landscape, making healthcare more accessible, efficient, responsive, and patient-centred.
Undergoing significant evolution since its widespread adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of telehealth (or video calling) has evolved from a temporary workaround to a mainstay in healthcare.
Delivering 30,583 video call (telehealth) consultations in 2023-24, Mater is now Queensland’s third largest public telehealth provider.
For Mater Telehealth Service Manager Bittu Ann Cherian, the growth is bringing healthcare closer to home.
“People can receive the care they need without having to leave their house, or worry about travel time, parking, or rushing to make it to the appointment on time,” says Ms Cherian.
More importantly, telehealth is bridging the gap for individuals living in rural or remote areas, or for those reliant on support from family members or caregivers to attend medical appointments.
“For those living in rural or remote areas, telehealth reduces the need for long journeys or paying for accommodation to access specialised care—making quality healthcare more accessible and less burdensome,” she says.
“As we navigate the complexities of this evolving field, the focus will need to remain on ensuring equitable access and embracing technological advancements to improve health outcomes for everyone,” says Ms Cherian.
“One of the main challenges we’re helping patients to overcome is ensuring equitable access for all. While technology has made significant advances, there are still disparities in reliable internet access, availability of devices, and digital literacy.”
As telehealth continues to expand, robust technology infrastructure is imperative. High-speed internet, secure data management systems, and user-friendly platforms must be prioritised to effectively support these services.
Moreover, it is crucial to raise awareness about telehealth and virtual care and educate patients on its benefits and functionalities.
“Creating a supportive environment where patients feel comfortable and confident using these technologies is essential for successful implementation,” she says.
“We are excited to continuing to expand our Telehealth services at Mater, providing quality care to patients anytime, anywhere. It’s about creating a solution that brings healthcare into your life without disrupting it.”
